Summary
Retroversion of the uterus is a condition where the body and fundus of the uterus are deviated backward, with the longitudinal axes of the body and cervix forming nearly a straight line. This condition can be transient and physiological, occurring when the bladder is full, and the uterus returns to its normal position after bladder emptying.
Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
RETROVERSION OF UTERUS, a position of the uterus in which the body and fundus of the uterus are deviated backward, with the longitudinal axes of the body and cervix forming nearly a straight line. The degree of deviation of the uterine body varies; in cases where the axis of the uterine body coincides with the pelvic midline, they speak of the median position of the uterus. Usually R. of U. occurs rarely, since this position of the uterus in most cases is combined with a backward flexion of the uterus (see Uterus, abnormal positions of the uterus, retroflexion of the uterus). As a transient and physiological phenomenon, R. of U. is observed when the bladder is full, after which the uterus returns to its usual position.
