Septicopyemia

Pathology, Infectious Diseases

Also known as: Septico-pyemia

Historical document, translated for reference. It reflects medical knowledge of the 1920s–30s and is not medical advice.

Summary

Septicopyemia is described in the 1930s Soviet Medical Encyclopedia as a variant of sepsis characterized by the development of purulent abscesses in internal organs. The article notes that since both sepsis and pyemia already exist as medical terms, the specific designation of septicopyemia is largely redundant.

Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

SEPTICOPYEMIA, a variant of sepsis (see) characterized by the development of abscesses in the organs. However, since the terms sepsis and pyemia already exist, septicopyemia should properly refer to intermediate forms in which both septic and pyemic phenomena are equally pronounced. This is usually the case in pyemia as well, so the use of the special term septicopyemia is essentially redundant.
