Tigerstedt Robert Adolf Arman (Robert Adolf Arman Tigerstedt, 1853-1923), known Finnish physiologist. After graduating from the medical faculty and defending his dissertation "Ueber mechanische Nervenreizung" (1881), he became an associate professor at the University of Helsinki. Invited by Professor Loven to Stockholm, Tigerstedt received there (1886) the title of full professor. In 1900 he returned to the University of Helsinki. Due to the reactionary policy of the tsarist government, T. soon resigned, but even under his successor (son - Karl Tigerstedt) he participated in the scientific work of the university, publishing articles on biological chemistry, pharmacology and medicine in the periodical press. The scientific works of T. are devoted mainly to questions of the physiology of blood circulation, metabolism and sensory organs. T. was the editor of "Skandinavisches Archiv für Physiologie" (Leipzig, from 1897) and the popular science journal in Swedish "Hygieia" (Stockholm, from 1900); T. is the author of the well-known monograph "Physiologie des Kreislaufes" (Vol. I-IV, Leipzig, 1921-23) and the widely spread textbook of physiology (Leipzig, 1st ed.-1897; 10th ed.-1923; translated into many European languages; 2nd Russian ed.-St. Petersburg, 1909). Under the editorship of T., "Handbuch der physiologischen Methodik" (Vol. I-III, Leipzig, 1911-14) was published. In addition to the listed publications, T. belongs to a number of physiological works published in the periodical press.
