VINDAVA (in Latvian Wentes-Pils), a seaside port city in Latvia, located openly on the shore of the Baltic Sea at the mouth of the Vinda River. The seashore stretches straight for several versts. The beach is wide, covered for several versts with fine-grained clean white sand. Dunes stretch along the shore; the dunes and the space behind them are covered with pine forest. The city center is 15 minutes' walk from the shore. The climate is maritime, temperate. Average annual temperature +6.2°C, summers +15.5°C (in July +16.9°C). In summer, the heat is moderated by sea winds. V. has long been famous as a good place for sea bathing; the bottom is sandy, firm. The water temperature is not high; on average, in August in different years from 14.5 to 16.5°C, in June from 8 to 11.5°C, in July from 9.5 to 15.1°C, in September 15.7°C. Bathing facilities with warm sea baths. There is a sanatorium for children with chronic diseases (tuberculosis and rickets). Season: from July 1 to September 15. The best time for bathing is August.
