Abderhalden, Emil (Emil Abderhalden), one of the greatest contemporary German biochemists. Born in 1877, graduated from the medical faculty of the University of Basel. He worked under the guidance of Bunge and Fischer. In 1908, A. received the title of professor in Halle, where he remains to this day as head of the department of physiology and physiological chemistry. A. has published together with his colleagues about 800 scientific works, of which the most remarkable are studies in the field of protein structure, where he succeeded by splitting proteins and synthesizing polypeptides to largely confirm the theory of E. Fischer that proteins consist of amino acids linked in the manner of polypeptide structure. Also remarkable are the works of Abderhalden in the field of digestive chemistry and enzymes. In 1909, A. discovered the so-called protective enzymes, which formed the basis of the so-called 'reaction of A.' developed by him (see Abderhalden's reaction). A. is the author of many textbooks, of which his textbook of physiological chemistry, which has gone through many editions, has been translated into almost all languages, including Russian. The scientific activity of A. as editor and publisher of major modern reference works is also very important: 'Handbuch der bio-chemischen (in the new edition-der biolo-gischen) Arbeitsmethoden', 'Biochemisches Handlexikon'. Since 1916, A. has been publishing the journal 'Fermentforschung'; since 1917, he has been publisher and one of the editors of the journal 'Pfliuger's Archiv'. A. received the title of doctor honoris causa in Halle, the gold medal of Berzelius (before him, E. Fischer received this medal). A. is a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and many other academies.
