Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)

Medical Bibliography, one of the types of specialized bibliography (from Greek biblos - book and grapho - I write), book description - a field of knowledge that deals with describing literary works. The work of bibliography consists of collecting, describing, and systematizing literature. The basis of collection is usually certain questions or topics to which the works are dedicated; collection can also be conducted according to other criteria (language, place, time of publication, etc.). Description achieves its purpose only when following certain rules. It should be done, whenever possible, directly from the book and contain for individual books - the surname and initials of the author, title, number of pages, place and year of publication; for articles in collective works, collections and journals, it is necessary to indicate, in addition, the name, volume or number and page of the publication. The most convenient system for bibliographic work is the card system (the so-called international size of card is widely used - 7.5x12.5 cm). The arrangement (classification) of bibliography can be chronological, alphabetical, systematic (by disciplines), subject (by individual topics, etc.). A large number of classification methods have been proposed, based on various principles. They all aim to facilitate the quick finding of the required literature; none of them is perfect. Of the most well-known classification systems currently in use, the following should be mentioned: 1. The International Decimal Classification of the International Bibliographic Institute in Brussels. 2. The Library of Congress Classification in Washington. Among the original Russian systems, we should mention the Reis system, adopted in the Library of the 1st Moscow State University, and the Baer system, adopted in the Library of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. For medical bibliography in cases covering many specialties and a very large number of titles, it is most convenient to use as detailed a subject-systematic classification as possible, arranging topics in alphabetical order; this is how indexing is done in Index Medicus and in Index Catalogue of the Library of the Surgeon-general's office U. S. Army; in such a system the number of subdivisions reaches hundreds and thousands. For small bibliographic works in the field of medicine, a simplified classification by disciplines, with division of the material into several dozen departments, is suitable. This principle forms the basis of the catalog of the Central Medical Library in Moscow.-There is general, national, and specialized bibliography. Great difficulties in medical bibliography, as in bibliography of other fields of knowledge, are connected with the enormous quantity and diversity of literary material, as well as the absence of a generally accepted classification of sciences. Nevertheless, a number of publications and institutions make it quite possible to orient oneself in medical literary production. Without considering it appropriate to provide an exhaustive medical bibliography here, we will only indicate the most complete and large bibliographic guides to medical literature. It should be noted that in foreign languages there is a whole series of large bibliographic and bibliographic-abstract collections and journals, already counting decades of existence. German bibliographic-abstract journals and collections and American library indexes and catalogs are distinguished by particular perfection. In the following summary, only the main sources covering world literature are given. As for Russian medical bibliography, unfortunately, we do not have any publication covering all the literature. The following summary of Russian medical bibliography is a selection from a large number of guides to Russian medical literature scattered in various periodic publications, as well as partially collected in special collections of Russian medical bibliography that appeared from time to time. Detailed current medical bibliography is conducted in the Central Medical Library of the People's Commissariat of Health of the RSFSR and in the V. I. Lenin Public Library of the USSR, in Moscow.
