Summary

Antiplanat is a photographic lens of an asymmetric design whose front and rear lenses have significant optical aberrations of opposite sign, which mutually cancel each other out during joint operation. Due to this asymmetry, the rear lens cannot be used independently as a landscape lens.

Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

ANTIPLANAT, a photographic lens of asymmetric construction, the front and rear lenses of which possess significant aberrations, but in opposite senses for each lens, so that under the simultaneous action of both lenses these defects are mutually eliminated; at the edges, the image is somewhat distorted. Due to the asymmetry of its structure, the rear lens cannot be used as a landscape lens.
