APERTURA (Latin), an anatomical term denoting an opening through which a certain canal or cavity opens. In this sense the word 'foramen' is sometimes used in anatomy. For example: A. piriformis — piriform opening; A. sinus sphenoidalis — opening of the sphenoid sinus; A. interna et externa aquaeductus vestibuli — internal and external opening of the vestibular aqueduct; A. externa canaliculi cochleae — external opening of the cochlear canaliculus; A. pelvis minoris inferior — inferior opening of the small pelvis; A. thoracis superior et inferior; A. valvulae coli — opening of the colic valve; A. medians ventriculi quarti (foramen Magendii) — unpaired median opening of the fourth ventricle; A. lateralis ventriculi quarti — paired lateral opening of the fourth ventricle, etc.
