Osip Vasilyevich ApTekman (1849-1926) was a revolutionary physician who studied at the Medico-Surgical Academy but left before graduation to join the 'To the People' movement. He was an organizer of the 'Land and Liberty' party and later became a Social Democrat, publishing valuable works on the revolutionary movement in Russia.

Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)

ApTekman, Osip Vasilyevich, physician-revolutionary (1849-1926); studied at the Medico-Surgical Academy, but several months before graduation 'went to the people'. A. was one of the organizers of the 'Land and Liberty' party and a member of it until the organization's dissolution, after which he joined the 'Black Repartition' (edited the group's organ). In 1880 he was exiled for 5 years to the Yakut region, after completing his exile he went abroad; graduated from the medical faculty in Munich. In 1889 he returned to Russia and began working as a zemstvo physician in Nizhny Novgorod. Here A. broke with the Narodovolts views and joined the Social Democrats. In 1905 he was arrested again; released in 1906, A. left for Switzerland. Until the beginning of the imperialist war he was a Menshevik, and then moved to the position of internationalists. ApTekman published valuable works on the history of the revolutionary movement in Russia. The most important of them: 'The Society "Land and Liberty" of the 1870s', 1st ed., 1905; 2nd ed., revised and expanded, was published in 1923. A. wrote a small brochure 'On Drunkenness' for the Pirogov Commission for the dissemination of hygienic knowledge.
