Also known as: Autonomous tumor growth

Historical document, translated for reference. It reflects medical knowledge of the 1920s–30s and is not medical advice.

Summary

This 1930s Soviet medical encyclopedia article defines autonomous growth as an independent and self-directed process characteristic of tumors. It explains that while the term is conventional, it reflects the fact that tumor growth is not subject to the normal regulatory influences that govern standard tissue growth in the organism.

Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

AUTONOMOUS GROWTH, independent, self-directed growth; a concept applied primarily to tumors, whose growth is to a certain extent independent of this or that state of the organism and, in this sense, as if self-contained. It goes without saying that designating tumor growth as autonomous is conventional and should be understood only in the sense that this growth is not subject to those influences that generally regulate the growth of the body's tissues (see Tumor).
