Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
CEPHALONES (from the Greek kephale—skull), a term given by Virchow to skulls of particularly large dimensions (over 550 mm horizontally). This refers to congenital forms of hypertrophy of the skull and brain as a type of partial gigantism of the body. Hydrocephalic enlargements of the skull are not included in the concept of cephalones. In general, the term is little used.
