Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)
BATUIEV, Nikolai Aleksandrovich (1855-1917), anatomist. After graduating in 1879 from the Military Medical Academy, in 1887 he defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Medicine—'Anatomical and surgical research on the urinary bladder and urethra.' From 1897 to 1900 he was a professor of anatomy at the St. Petersburg Women's Medical Institute, from where he moved to the Odessa University, where he took the chair of anatomy at the newly opened medical faculty. In organizing the department, he created a large anatomical museum; some craniological collections of the museum (Ukrainian, Jewish skulls) in their extent are still to this day the only ones in the USSR. He collected extensive ornithological and ichthyological collections for the urban anatomical-zoological museum planned before the imperialist war; after B.'s death, these collections were transferred to the university's zoological museum. The 'Lectures on Anatomy' published by Batuiev (Odessa, 1907) are adapted for the study of anatomy by means of dissection.
