Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

BODELOK, Jean Louis (Jean Louis Baudelocque, 1746-1810), one of the outstanding French obstetricians of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He held the chair of obstetrics at the École de santé and was the first director of the 'Maternité' established during the Revolution. He compiled an excellent for his time guide to obstetrics ('L'art des accouchements', Paris, 1781), which he republished four times (4th edition-1807). One of Baudelocque's most important merits was the introduction into obstetric practice of accurate pelvic measurement in general, and in particular, the methodology of external pelvic measurement developed by him, which is still used today. The external conjugate is named in his honor as Baudelocque's conjugate.
