LICHKUS Lazar Grigorievich (1858-1926), a prominent Russian obstetrician. After graduating from the Medico-Surgical Academy (1881), he was retained at the department of M. I. Gorvits and simultaneously took a position as a physician at the Mariinsky maternity home (now named after Shreder); in this maternity home, Lichkus's entire medical service took place; from 1910 until his death he served as its director. In addition to medical work, Lichkus conducted extremely fruitful teaching work at the maternity home, training hundreds of midwives. In his final years, he served as professor of obstetrics at the Leningrad Medical Institute. Alongside his medical activities, L. worked scientifically, leaving several dozen published works. For 17 years, Lichkus was the permanent secretary, and from 1914 to 1916, the chairman of the Leningrad Obstetric-Gynecological Society. In his final years, L. devoted himself to work on the protection of motherhood and infancy and greatly contributed to the proper organization of this matter in Leningrad.
