Gorvits, Martin Isaevich (1837-1883), a prominent Russian obstetrician and gynecologist of the 19th century. After graduating from the Medico-Surgical Academy in 1860, he spent three years abroad. Returning to Petersburg, he defended his dissertation («An Attempt at a Theory of Abortion», SPB, 1865), worked for 5 years at the Obstetric Institute, and in 1870 became director of the Mariinsky Maternity Home (founded by him in reality). From 1875, he was professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Medico-Surgical Academy.
He left 30 scientific works, including: «A Guide to the Pathology and Therapy of the Female Reproductive Sphere» (parts 1-2, SPB, 1874). The guide had great and well-deserved success and during the author's lifetime went through 2 editions. In it, the author reveals himself not only as a first-class scientist but also as an outstanding teacher. According to the accounts of his students, G. also possessed exceptional lecturing talent.
