AXOPLASM (from Latin axis - axis and plasma), an amorphous substance containing the fibrils of the nerve fiber axis cylinder (neurofibrils); it represents the continuation of the nerve cell protoplasm into the axial-cylindrical process and is surrounded on its surface by a thin, denser layer of "cortex." The term was introduced by Schifferdecker.
