BABKIN, Boris Petrovich (born in 1877), a prominent physiologist. After graduating in 1901 from the Military Medical Academy, he was retained there for three years and began working under Professor I. P. Pavlov on the physiology of digestion and higher nervous activity; in 1904, B. defended his dissertation-"An Attempt at a Systematic Study of Complex Nervous (Psychic) Phenomena in the Dog." During a scientific trip abroad, B. worked with E. Fischer and at the biological station in Naples. He was a professor of physiology at the Agricultural Institute in Alexandria (1912), and later in Odessa (1915). At present, B. is a professor of physiology in Halifax (Canada). B. is the author of a monumental work-"External Secretion of the Digestive Glands," which was first published in German in 1914, and later in Russian (1st edition in 1915, 2nd in 1927).
