SABANEEV Ivan Fedorovich (born in 1856), a well-known surgeon. He graduated from the medical faculty in Kyiv. He first completed his internship in therapy under Mering, then worked at the Military Medical Academy, where he was sent for advanced training (1886-87). From 1887, his activities were inextricably linked with the surgical departments of Odessa. From 1904 to 1908, S. served as a privat-docent at the university, teaching a course in surgical pathology. S. was one of the main initiators and leaders in the construction of a new large hospital (now the Regional Hospital), opened in 1902, of which he was the chief physician until 1908, when he was forced to leave the hospital under pressure from the authorities of the time (Tolmachev and others) and temporarily became a private practitioner, while continuing his

scientific work. He was particularly blamed for his active participation in organizing the so-called. internship at the Regional Hospital and his active work with its members-young physician-interns1, among whom he enjoyed great popularity and influence due to his love for young people and his desire to make the internship not only a purely scientific and practical school, but also a school of life. The Black Hundred authorities of Odessa considered the internship a "nest of sedition". During the Civil War, Sabaneev emigrated to Turkey. S.'s main works that made his name famous relate to plastic operations; among them, the operation amput. fe-mor. intercond. gave him world fame. S.'s main works: on osteoplasty of the nasal spine (dissertation, Odessa, 1888); on the intercondylar osteoplastic amputation of the thigh (1890; see Sabaneev's operation); on the surgical treatment of tuberculosis at the liman; on blood vessel suturing (1895); on preperitoneal hernias (1897); "To the history of the internship" (Jubilee collection of the Odessa Regional Hospital 1902-1927, edited by M.
