BRUSHEIN, Sergei Alexandrovich, Honored Scientist, Professor of Physiotherapy at the State Institute for Advanced Medical Studies in Leningrad, outstanding specialist in physiotherapy, worker for the advancement of physicians, and public figure; born in 1873. Graduated from the Medical Faculty of Kazan University in 1897. Worked in the clinic for mental and nervous diseases at the Military Medical Academy under the guidance of Professor V. M. Bekhterev and with Professors Gerhardt, Jolly, Leiden, Mendel, Oppenheim, Marie, Babinski and others. Brushtein is the founder and director of the State Physiotherapeutic Institute in Leningrad, member of the Scientific Medical Council of the People's Commissariat of Health of the RSFSR, editor-in-chief of the "Journal for Advanced Medical Studies" and the journal "Physiotherapy", honorary chairman of the Leningrad Physiotherapeutic Society, honorary member of the Odessa Balneological Society, chairman of the All-Union Association of Physiotherapists, deputy chairman of the All-Union Committee for the Fight against Rheumatism. B. has over 70 works on various issues of physiotherapy and related fields; of these, the main ones are: "On the Vasomotor Center of the Medulla Oblongata" ("Review of Psychiatry, Neurology, etc.", 1901, No. 13) - the localization of this center in the area of formationis reticularis griseae was established; "The Effect of General Electro-light Baths on the Associative Motor Reflex in Man", dissertation (St. Petersburg, 1910), "Die Kromayersehe Quarzlampe als Antineuralgicum" ("Zeitschrift fur diatetische und physikalische Therapie", Vol. VIII, 1909-10) - the significance of mercury-quartz irradiation in the treatment of neuralgia was first indicated; "La goutte et son traitement par l'emanation du radium" ("Revue des agents physiques", 1913, No. 41) and others, relating to the treatment of radium emanation. Under the editorship of Brushtein, "Guide to Physical Methods of Treatment" (L., 1928) was published, compiled by employees of the State Physiotherapeutic Institute in Leningrad.
