PLETNEV Dmitrii Dmitrievich (born 1872), outstanding professor-therapist, honored scientist of the Russian Federation. Graduated from Moscow University in 1896, after which he worked in the clinics of Pavlinov, Shervinsky, and Golubinin as an ordinor and assistant. In 1906 he defended his dissertation on cardiac arrhythmias. 1906-08 he spent abroad, where he worked as an assistant in the clinic of Kraus in Berlin, as well as with F. Müller and Naunin. Since 1911 - professor of the propaedeutic clinic of the Higher Women's Courses, and from 1917 to 1929 - director of the faculty, then hospital therapeutic clinic of 1st Moscow University. At present P. is professor of the Central Institute for Advanced Medical Studies and director of the Scientific Research Institute of Functional Diagnostics and Experimental Therapy of the People's Commissariat of Health. P. is also a member of the Scientific Medical Council of the RSFSR and Ukrainian SSR, a member of the board of the All-Union Society of Therapists, and a member of a number of foreign scientific societies. In 1931 P. was elected a corresponding member of the Berlin Medical Society. P. repeatedly acted as a keynote speaker at therapeutic congresses and was elected chairman of the X Congress of Therapists in Leningrad.

P. has published over 50 original scientific works, a significant part of which are in foreign languages. P.'s works are devoted mainly to questions of cardiology and the study of the autonomic nervous system. In particular, P. was the first to point out the differences in the clinical picture of thrombosis of the right and left coronary arteries of the heart and the possibility of their differential diagnosis. Along with questions of therapy and clinical internal diseases, P.'s works are also devoted to the history of medicine and general problems of pathology and clinical medicine. The main works of P.: 'Experimental studies on the question of the origin of arrhythmia' (dissertation, Moscow, 1906); 'Morgagni-Adams-Stokes symptom complex' (Modern Clinic and Therapy, Volume VII, No. 4, 1908); 'Typhus fever' (2nd edition, Moscow, 1922); 'Russian therapeutic schools - Zakhar'in, Botkin, Ostroumov' (Moscow, 1923); 'Fundamentals of therapy for chronic heart failure' (Moscow, 1932). P. wrote a number of chapters in collective guides published under his editorship; 'Fundamentals of Therapy' (together with S. A. Brushtein, Vols. I-III, Moscow-Leningrad, 1925-27); 'Radiodiagnosis' (together with P. P. Lazarev, Vols. I-II, Moscow-Leningrad, 1926-28); 'Special pathology and therapy of internal diseases' (together with G. F. Lang, Vols. I-IV, Moscow-Leningrad, 1927-31); 'Fundamentals of clinical diagnosis' (together with A. M. Levin, 4th edition, Moscow-Leningrad, 1928); 'Visceral syphilis' (together with V. M. Kogan-Yasny, Leningrad, 1930); 'Course of infectious diseases' (together with S. I. Zlatogorov, Vols. I-II, Moscow, 1932-33). P. is one of the founders and permanent editor-in-chief of the widely circulated journal 'Klinicheskaia Meditsina' (Moscow-Leningrad, since 1920). Through his scientific and teaching activities, Pletnev contributed significantly to the development of therapeutic clinics in the USSR. A number of Pletnev's assistants have held and hold chairs in the USSR (Kliucharev, Vikhert, Vinogradov).
