Gerhardt, Karl (Karl Gerhardt, 1833-1902), outstanding German clinician-therapist and pediatrician. He studied in Würzburg, was an assistant to Bamberger and Grisinger. From 1860 - privat-docent in Würzburg, from 1861 - professor of clinical internal medicine in Jena, from 1872 - in Würzburg, in 1885 he took the chair of Frerichs in Berlin. Of his works, the most famous are: "Der Kehlkopfskroup" (Tübingen, 1859); "Dei-Stand des Diaphragmas" (Tübingen, 1860); "Lehrbuch der Auskultation und Perkussion" (Vol. I-II, 6th ed., Tübingen, 1897-1900); "Lehrbuch der Kinderkrankheiten" (5th ed., Tübingen, 1899); "Kehlkopfgeschwulste und Bewegungsstorungen der Stimmbander" (Special Pathology and Therapy, ed. by H. Nothnagel, Vienna, 1896); "Die syphilitischen Erkrankungen des Kehlkopfes und der Luftröhre" (ibid., 1898). With his name are associated the so-called Gerhardt's sound change and Gerhardt's reaction of urine in diabetes. He also described the yellow spot (macula flava, or nodulus elasticus) on the vocal cords.
