significant works in this field are studies of the extensive region of Caucasian mineral waters, begun by him in 1907 together with the geologists Ogilvy and Langwagen («Brief geological outline of the region of Caucasian mineral waters», Materials for the knowledge of the geological structure of Russia, vol. 3, Moscow, 1911; «Zheleznovodsk, hydrogeological outline», ibid., and others). G. has accumulated extensive material on the geology of mineral springs («Mineral waters», Natural productive forces of Russia, vol. IV, book 40, Petrograd, 1916). G. is a member of a number of scientific societies, since 1914 - secretary of the Russian Mineralogical Society, since 1919 - senior geophysicist in the Mathematical Institute of the Academy of Sciences, since 1920 - chairman of the department of physical geography of the Russian Geographical Society. From the same year, G. was elected professor of the department of volcanology at Leningrad University. Currently, G. holds the position of senior geologist of the Geological Committee. G. has written over 70 scientific works.
