Summary

The Bardeen-Rohrer Index is a height-weight index of physical build representing the ratio of body weight to height cubed. Described in the 1930s Soviet encyclopedia, it was initially used to identify children in primary need of public nutrition, though it proved inadequate for this purpose.

Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

BARDEEN-RORHER INDEX (height-weight index of build of Bardeen, Index der Körperfülle von Rohrer), one of the indices of physical development, representing the ratio of weight to height taken to the third power and characterizing the ratio of body mass to its volume. Practically, the Bardeen-Rohrer Index was used to identify children in primary need of public nutrition, but it did not justify itself in this sense (see also Indices).
