Brenner-Erb Formula

Physiology, Radiology & Physiotherapy

Also known as: Brenner-Erb law, Brenner's formula

Historical document, translated for reference. It reflects medical knowledge of the 1920s–30s and is not medical advice.

Summary

The Brenner-Erb formula describes the sequence of muscle contractions in humans under the influence of galvanic current. It details the order in which contractions occur at the cathode and anode during circuit closure and opening.

Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

BRENNER-ERB FORMULA (Brenner-Erb), a formula for the contraction of muscles in humans under the influence of galvanic current. The first visible (minimal) contraction occurs at cathode closure (Cathode Closure Contraction); with an increase in current, the contraction increases at the cathode, but is also obtained at anode closure (Anode Closure Contraction). With even stronger currents, contractions are successively obtained at anode opening (Anode Opening Contraction) and, finally, at cathode opening (Cathode Opening Contraction). (For details, see Pflüger's law.)
