Duane Forceps, a modified model of the ordinary American Muse forceps, are distinguished from them by their strength, durability, and the shape of their hooks. The latter, in contrast to the thin curved teeth of the Muse forceps [see separate table (vol. VII, art. 43-44), fig. 7], have the shape of an isosceles triangle, with a point at the free end, and depart from the ends of the blades at a right angle. The blades are made solid for greater massiveness, without a cut-out between the hooks. There are forceps with two and five teeth. The length of the forceps is 23 cm, of which 16 cm falls to the longer blade. Duane forceps, when grasping the uterus or its tumors, firmly grasp the tissues and do not slip off even when a considerable force is applied. Their application in gynecology is extremely diverse: it can be said that no operative intervention, small or large, is without Muse forceps or similar ones. Duane forceps are used for the reduction and fixation of the vaginal portion, as well as for the removal of tumors as a fixing instrument. Duane forceps have an ordinary ratchet for fixing the blades in the given position. It is far from indifferent how many teeth the forceps are fastened with. One should always watch, especially for the beginner, that the instruments are fastened more loosely, then they hold better and do not bite into the tissues.
