ENUCLEATION (syn. shelling out), a surgical operation consisting of the complete removal of various spherical tumors (e.g., atheroma, dermoid cyst, adenomatous node-goiter from the thyroid gland, etc.), or the eye (enucleation of the eyeball). Sometimes this operation is combined with the partial removal of tissue surrounding the tumor (for example, enucleation-resection during nodular goiter operations). In histology, enucleation is the removal of the cell nucleus.
