GRAMMATINATI, Ivan Nikolaevich (1858-1917), the first professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Tomsk University. After graduating from the Medico-Surgical Academy in Petersburg, he received specialized education in the clinic of Professor K. F. Slavyansky. In 1883, he defended his dissertation "Materials for the study of metabolism in the first days of the postpartum period" (dissertation, St. Petersburg, 1883). In 1888, Grammatinati became a privat-docent at the Military Medical Academy. For some time, he was an ordinador at a zemskaya hospital in Saratov. In 1891, he was appointed professor at Tomsk University, to which he devoted all his subsequent life. In addition to the university clinic, G. founded the Obstetrics Institute in Tomsk and thus educated not only several generations of physicians but also midwives, contributing to the organization of obstetric care in Siberia. In 1905, he founded the "Obstetrics-Gynecological Society" at Tomsk University. He left about 40 scientific works; among them, the most famous are those in which he substantiated his method for treating inflammatory diseases of the female reproductive sphere (see Grammatinati method).
