PARYSHEV Dmitry Adriyanovich (1858-1922), prominent Russian gynecologist. In 1883 he graduated from the Med.-Surg. Academy, worked in the clinic of Slavyansky and in the clinic of Vil'yé. In 1897 he moved to municipal service (head of the Vyborgskiy maternity home; he held this position until his death) and devoted himself almost exclusively to scientific and social activities. In 1903-13, in addition, he worked on operative gynecology in the department he created at the former Elisabeth Community of Mercy Sisters. P. authored a number of works on gynecology and operative obstetrics (on the operative treatment of cysts of the broad ligaments, on the prevention of blennorrhea, etc.). P. was one of the first to point out the importance of cesarean section in cases of placenta praevia. P. was a major specialist in resort medicine and repeatedly presented reports on the mud therapy of female diseases. Significant works were published by P. on obstetrics and the protection of motherhood and infancy; these include a comparative assessment of urban maternity shelters in St. Petersburg, a work on the type of normal maternity home, on the reorganization of urban obstetric care in St. Petersburg, on consultations for pregnant women and their connection with maternity homes. Shortly before his death, P. presented reports on rest homes for pregnant women, on nutrition during pregnancy, on the effects of fasting on the course of pregnancy and on the fetus. P. worked in a number of commissions on the reorganization of obstetric care, was vice-chairman of the Conference of Obstetricians, chairman of the Society for the Protection of Mother and Infant, and was repeatedly elected to the position of chairman of the Obstetrical-Gynecological Society.
