Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)
Pobedinsky Nikolai Ivanovich (1861-1923), prominent Russian gynecologist, professor at 1st Moscow State University; graduated from Moscow University in 1886; worked at the former Old Ekaterininskaya Hospital (now named after Babukhin), then at the obstetrics and gynecology clinic of Moscow University, where he remained with some forced interruptions until 1921. In 1894, he defended his dissertation "Materials for the Study of Placenta Previa from a Clinical Perspective" (Moscow, 1894), in 1895 was elected privat-docent, in 1908 became a university professor, and in 1909 became director of the clinic of the former Higher Women's Courses. Officially, he became director of the 1st Moscow State University clinic in 1915 (in fact, he had been director for the last 10 years of Makayev's life; in 1913, after his death and election by the medical faculty, he was not confirmed by the minister—he contributed to the prosperity of the Moscow clinic, created his own school, and, being a talented teacher, educated several generations of doctors (it should be noted that P. was the first to introduce the seminar method at the faculty). He also devoted considerable effort to organizing the department of 2nd Moscow State University, where he was the founder and first director. P. left about 35 scientific works; some of them are known abroad. The majority of P.'s works are devoted to pathological pregnancy and operative obstetrics. Of greatest attention are P.'s works on accouchement force, osteomalacia, placenta praevia, cesarean section, pubiotomy, eclampsia, pregnancy complicated by cancer. It is particularly necessary to mention his program report at the V Congress (1913) on methods of treatment of a narrow pelvis; this work was the result of P.'s many years of observations. P.'s "Short Textbook of Obstetrics" (1st ed., Moscow, 1905), which went through 6 editions (6th ed., Moscow, 1932), enjoys great popularity. P. also took an active part in public life, participated in congresses, and was a member of the permanent board of the All-Union Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians from 1911 to 1923. For a long time, he was chairman of the Moscow Obstetrics and Gynecology Society, and on the 75th anniversary of the Moscow clinic, he was elected its honorary member.
