HERNIARIA GLABRA L., smooth rupturewort, a small herbaceous plant of the family Paronychiaceae. It is found in sandy places, on bluffs, and along riverbanks in Europe and the USSR. The root is multi-headed, the leaves are opposite, sessile, and ovate; the flowers are small, greenish-yellow, and gathered in whorls. The taste of the herb is astringent. It is harvested during flowering (June, July). Constituents include herniarin, saponin, paronychin (an alkaloid), and tannins. It is used in folk medicine for dropsy.
