Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
IRRITATIO SPINALIS, pain in the back in neuropathies, especially in neurasthenia and in traumatic neurosis. The symptom occurs very frequently, has great clinical significance, as it may give rise to suspicions about the presence of organic damage to the spinal cord, especially damage to the spine. To exclude spondylitis, the absence of localized tenderness of the spine on percussion and pressure (in I. s. the tenderness is mostly more or less diffuse), the absence of typical limitation of movement, and the absence of localized tenderness at the site of the lesion when pressure is applied to the shoulders are important. However, all these signs have only conditional significance, and often the question can only be resolved with the help of radiography.
