MEGASPHERES (from Greek megas—large and sphaira—sphere), an embryological term proposed by Wilhelm His to denote large yolk globules lying in the cavity beneath the germ layers in birds. They detach from the surface of the yolk, serve to nourish the germ layers, and soon disappear.
