Ruszel-Sudzilovsky Nikolai Konstantinovich (1848-1930), physician-revolutionary, participant in the 'going to the people' movement of the 1870s. Having emigrated from Russia, he graduated from the medical faculty in Romania, where he acquired as a physician wide popularity among the population. In 1881, for revolutionary activity, he was arrested and expelled from Romania. After several years which he spent in Belgium, Italy, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, engaged in various clinics and laboratories in chemistry, pharmacology, bacteriology and mainly eye diseases, R.-S. goes to America, becomes an American citizen, and in 1892 settles for a long time in Honolulu on the Hawaiian Islands. Well acquainted, thanks to extensive medical practice and social educational activity with the local population, mastering the native language, he soon becomes head of the native Canadian party which he organized, in opposition to American influence, which wins victory in the upcoming elections to the chamber and senate. R.-S. becomes president of the senate, in fact the head of the republic, and carries out a number of political and social reforms, including in the field of healthcare and sanitary legislation. During the Russo-Japanese War, he moves to Japan, where he organizes educational work and carries out revolutionary propaganda among Russian prisoners of war. Deprived by the American government, at the request of the Russian, of the right of citizenship, he remains in Japan after the war, continuing his work in medicine and chemistry, maintaining extensive correspondence with specialists of Western Europe and America, and also engaging in social and literary activity. The last 9 years of life R.-S. lived in China, in Tientsin, practicing medicine as an ophthalmologist among the Chinese poor. He was a pensioner of the Soviet government.
