SHIMNEVICH Vladimir Mikhaylovich (1858-1922), professor of zoology at Leningrad University (from 1889), corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences (from 1920), author of numerous (over 130) works on comparative anatomy and embryology of invertebrates. His most important works are his articles on the embryology of arachnids and numerous articles on the taxonomy of Pantopoda, which culminated in his treatment of Pantopoda for the Academy of Sciences' 'Fauna of Russia'; this two-volume work was published after the author's death. To Shimnevich also belongs a series of theoretical articles on the relationships between Bilateria and Radiata, on the principle of metorhysis (1914), and others. S. conducted extensive popularization work, being the author of several excellent and widely distributed guides to zoology that went through several editions: 'Biological Foundations of Zoology' (posthumous, 5th ed., vols. I-II, Moscow-Leningrad, 1923-25) and 'Course in Comparative Anatomy of Vertebrates' (3rd ed., Moscow-Leningrad, 1923; translated into German), and others.
