FREUND, Wilhelm Alexander (1833–1917), a prominent German gynecologist. He received his medical education in Breslau. In 1876, he performed the excision of a cancer-degenerating uterus via laparotomy, and in 1878 he published the work "Eine neue Methode der Ovariotomie" (Zentralbl. f. Gynäkologie, B. XXXVIII, 1914). This brought Freund to the forefront of German gynecologists of that time and opened the way to a major academic career—already in 1879 he obtained a chair in Strasbourg and held it until the age limit. He left behind many scientific works.
