WINSLOW (Jacob Benignus Winslow, 1669-1760, more correctly Winslow), a famous anatomist, of Danish origin, first studied theology, then medicine in Holland. In 1698 he moved to Paris, where he worked on anatomy under the guidance of Du Verney. Thanks to the recommendation of his teacher, he became a member of the Academy of Sciences and received a professorship in anatomy (1705). Among the numerous students of this outstanding anatomist of the 18th century was A. Haller. According to W.'s plan, an anatomical theater was built in Paris in 1745. W.'s merits are especially great in the field of topographical anatomy. His main work was the three-volume textbook 'Exposition anatomique de la structure du corps humain' (1732)—the result of his 30-year work, translated into many languages and widely distributed even in the second half of the 18th century.

In the 'Memoires de l'Academie des Sciences' there are many of his communications on descriptive and comparative anatomy and on physiology, of which should be noted: 'Observations sur les fibres du coeur et sur les valvules' (Paris, 1711), 'Description d'une valvule singuliere de la veine cave et nouveau sentiment sur la fameuse question du trou ovale' (Paris, 1717), 'Eclaircissements sur la circulation du sang dans le foetus' (Paris, 1725).
