ABDOMEN (from the Latin abdomen - belly, abdomen), in arthropods (crustaceans, arachnids, and insects), the posterior region of the body, which houses most of the viscera.--Abdominal (ventral) - a term referring to all formations associated with the abdominal region of the animal. Abdominal pores (pori abdominales) - openings connecting the body cavity with the external environment in some fishes and reptiles; they serve for the excretion of genital products or nitrogenous metabolic products.
