Summary

This article from the 1928–1936 Soviet Great Medical Encyclopedia defines amorphus as a severe degree of fetal maldevelopment resulting in a shapeless mass where body parts are barely differentiable. It notes that X-rays may sometimes reveal a properly developed trunk skeleton, and cross-references acardius and retinal detachment.

Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

AMORPHUS (from the Greek a- negative particle, and morphe - form), designation of the highest degrees of fetal maldevelopment, when the fetus represents a shapeless lump in which it is impossible to differentiate individual body parts or this can be achieved only with great difficulty (cases of acardius, see). An X-ray of an amorphus may sometimes reveal a properly developed skeleton of the trunk. AMOTIO RETINAE, see Retina.
