Apperception
Historical document, translated for reference. It reflects medical knowledge of the 1920s–30s and is not medical advice.
Summary
Apperception is a psychological term meaning the influence of a person's previous experience on their perception. Because individuals tend to interpret new impressions and thoughts through the lens of their habitual professional or emotional experience, concepts of professional and emotional apperception arise, which are closely related to the notion of mental set.
Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
APPERCEPTION (from Latin appercipere to grasp, to understand), a psychological term meaning the influence of a person's previous experience on their perceptions. Owing to the fact that every person tends to perceive new impressions, thoughts, and so forth from the standpoint of their habitual experience (professional, emotional), people speak of professional, emotional, and similar apperception. In this case, the concept of apperception is close in meaning to the concept of "mental set."
