ASOPIA FARINALIS L IS . (flour moth), a moth of the Pyralidae family, with a wingspan of about 2 cm. The eggs of A. f. are laid in flour; the hatched larvae spin tubes from webbing and live in flour in colonies. They feed on flour, grains, and potatoes in bags. Control of A. f. - see Warehouse pests. AZO COMPOUNDS, numerous organic compounds containing an azo group - N__N -. The most important are those in which the azo group is connected to two aromatic radicals (aryls). These aromatic A. are solid, crystalline, colored substances. Their derivatives play an extremely important role in the dye industry; this group includes a number of valuable dyes - azo dyes, including those used in microscopy (see Azo dyes).
