Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
AT EASE POSITION, a position of the human body characterized by 1) a large base of support, as the feet are spread apart, and 2) support primarily on one leg. The at ease position is the most economical form of standing due to the fact that, with a relatively large base of support, the swaying of the body is minimal and it is much more stable than in other standing positions (with heels together). The energy expenditure in the at ease position is only 3% greater than in a sitting position, and it is less tiring due to the ability to shift the body weight from one leg to the other. In the military, the at ease position is given as a rest.
