Antonin Gosset (1872-?) was a French surgeon known for his contributions to military surgery during World War I, particularly in organizing mobile surgical units. He specialized in abdominal surgery, developing techniques for gastrotomy, cholecystectomy, and duodenotomy.

Gosset, Antonin (Antonin Gosset, b. 1872), noted French surgeon. In 1900, he brilliantly defended his doctoral dissertation ('Studies on Pyonephroses', P., 1900), in 1901 he received the title of privat-docent (agrege), and in 1903 became a surgeon in the Paris municipal hospitals. In 1919-20, G. received the title of professor and taught a course in surgical pathology at the medical faculty in Paris. Since 1920, he has been professor of surgical clinic at the same university. During the world war (February 1915), he organized the first automobile surgical hospitals in France, which rendered enormous service in providing emergency aid to the wounded. In the field of military surgery, he published works on penetrating wounds of the abdomen, wounds of the kidneys and ureter, wounds of peripheral nerves, on cranioplasty, and on wounds of the spinal cord. G.'s main works in the field of surgery relate to the technique of gastrotomy, gastroenterostomy, to surgical interventions in the area of the bile duct and hepatic duct ('On duodenotomy in choledocholithiasis', Journ. de chir., t. V, No. 5, 1914; 'On choledochotomy for lithiasis', Presse med., 1925, No. 31). He proposed a method of cholecystectomy by approaching the gallbladder from behind and developed a method of duodenotomy for stones in the common bile duct. In the field of gynecology, he

proposed a method of total abdominal hysterectomy for purulent inflammation of the Fallopian tubes, with drainage through the vagina. Finally, he described the technique of thoracotomy for lung echinococcosis and proposed a special method of total laryngectomy. G. actively collaborated in a number of major collective works on surgery.
