Barsukov, Mikhail Ivanovich, revolutionary physician, one of the prominent organizers of healthcare in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (born in 1890). He began revolutionary activity while still a gymnasium student in Petersburg, organizing working and student youth under the Petersburg Committee of the RSDRP(b) (in 1905). In 1914, upon graduating from Moscow University, he was mobilized as a military physician to the German front. Participant in the October days of 1917 in Petrograd (commissar of the Medical-Sanitary Department of the Petrograd Military Revolutionary Committee).

Over time, B. developed vigorous activity, primarily in the field of military-sanitary affairs, first as chairman of the board of the Main Military-Sanitary Administration, deputy chairman of the Committee for the Reorganization of the Red Cross (1917-18) and member of the board of Medical Collegiums (1918). With the emergence of fronts, Barsukov directed the healthcare protection of the Red Army as chief of the sanitary department of the armies of the Eastern Front (1918-19), and then as chief of the sanitary department of the Southwestern Front and Western Military District (1919-20). After a two-year term as a member of the Central Committee of the Medsantrud union, B. returned to medical-organizational activity, from 1923 holding the posts of head of the Far Eastern Krai Department of Health and authorized representative of the People's Commissariat of Health for the Department of Communications; from 1924 B. was People's Commissar of Health of the BSSR.
