Baranov, Mikhail Ivanovich, one of the organizers of healthcare in the USSR. Born in 1888; after graduating from Moscow University in 1913, he was mobilized in 1914 and remained in military service until 1917. Baranov's revolutionary activity began in 1905. In October 1917, Baranov was a member of the Moscow Soviet and head of the sanitary department of the Moscow military district. In 1918-20, Baranov was a member of the board of the People's Commissariat of Health of the RSFSR and head of the Main Military Sanitary Administration. In 1920-25, he was deputy people's commissar of health of the Ukrainian SSR. From 1925, he headed the healthcare system of the Siberian region and simultaneously was a member of the Central Committee of the Russian Red Cross Society. From 1928, he was a member of the board of the People's Commissariat of Health of the RSFSR.
