Summary

The Drechsel flask is used for washing gases by passing them through a liquid that traps unwanted impurities. It consists of a vessel through which gas enters, bubbles through the liquid, and exits, though it has a drawback where liquid can be drawn back into the inlet under certain conditions.

Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

DRECHSEL FLASK (Drechsel), serves for washing gases by passing them through one or another liquid that traps unwanted impurities (fig. 1). Gas enters through a, passes a in bubbles through the liquid layer, and exits through b. Some inconvenience of the D. f. consists in the fact that with a change in pressure or improper connection, the liquid can be drawn back into a; this drawback is eliminated in the gas washing flasks of Tishchenko (fig. 2), which represent a vessel divided by a vertical glass wall into two halves that communicate only through a small opening near the lower edge of the partition.
