FENOMENOV Nikolai Nikolaevich (1855-1918), professor, outstanding Russian obstetrician and gynecologist of the late 19th, early 20th centuries. He received his medical education at the Medico-Surgical Academy; in 1880 he defended his dissertation "On the teaching of the kyphotic pelvis and rupture of the symphysis during childbirth" (St. Petersburg, 1880); in 1882 he received the title of privat-docent of the academy and already in 1883 he replaced the deceased Gorvitz, after which he went on a foreign business trip; returning from abroad, he received a chair in Kazan, where he remained for 14 years (1885-1899); in 1899 he was invited to the position of director of the Nadezhdinskoye (now named after Snegirev) obstetric institution in St. Petersburg and the chair of obstetrics and women's diseases at the Women's Medical Institute; simultaneously he was medical inspector of the Institutions of Empress Maria. Already his dissertation highlighted F. as a promising scientific worker, and his professorial activity in Kazan made F. one of the leading specialists of that time. In Kazan he had to develop the clinic and operative activity on new principles, and he was one of the first in Russia to switch to asepsis; he highly valued teaching and scientific research work, developed a number of modifications of obstetric and gynecological operations, invented a number of new instruments. F. left many literary-scientific works, of which the most important was "Operative Obstetrics" (Kazan, 1892), which went through several editions, has not lost its significance to this day and can rightly be considered classic.
