Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)
Vladimirov, Vladimir Dmitrievich (1837-1903), known surgeon. After graduating from the medical faculty of Kazan University in 1860, he completed an internship in the surgical clinic of Yelachich and was sent abroad, where he worked under Langenbeck, Lusk, and others. Upon returning to Kazan, he worked in the provincial hospital. In 1872, he presented a dissertation on bone plastic operations on the foot ("Several new bone plastic operations on the lower limbs"); since then, the operation has been named after him. Three years later, Mikulich independently proposed an almost identical operation based on the same bone plastic principle. Soon after defending his dissertation, V. twice competed for the chair of surgery in Kazan, but unsuccessfully both times. In 1874, he left Kazan for Penza, where he took the position of senior surgeon in the provincial hospital, developing an unusually extensive surgical activity for those times: alone, he operated on more than 1,000 cases of bladder stones. While working in the hospital, V. was keenly interested in questions of scientific surgery; in 1884, after returning from a foreign business trip, he introduced the antiseptic method of treating fistulas in his hospital.
