VLADIMIROV, Alexander Alexandrovich (born 1862), professor, is known for his experimental work on glanders and his public activities in the fight against tuberculosis. After graduating from the medical faculty in Dorpat in 1888, he studied bacteriology under Koch in Berlin in 1889. In 1895, he was offered the headship of the Epizootiological Department of the Institute of Experimental Medicine, for which Vladimirov previously spent a year at the Veterinary Institute in Alfort (near Paris) and acquired the title of veterinary surgeon. From this moment begins his intensive work on glanders, tuberculosis, and other zoonoses, mainly in the direction of immunobiology, which made Vladimirov's laboratory one of the centers for the scientific development of this issue and created a whole school of young Russian veterinary surgeons. In 1897, Vladimirov organized a special laboratory within his department for the experimental study of bubonic plague and the production of anti-plague preparations, and headed it for 21/2 years, until its transfer to the "Alexander" fort near Kronstadt. After the February Revolution, Vladimirov was commissioned by the Petrograd Soviet of Workers' Deputies to oversee the construction of the Murmansk Railway to eliminate the glaring unsanitary conditions at this construction site. From 1918 to 1927, Vladimirov was the director of the Institute of Experimental Medicine (with a break in 1919-1921). In 1920-1922, he also served as an extraordinary plenipotentiary of the People's Commissariats of Health, Railways, and Military and Naval Affairs for the organization of sanitary and disinfection work at the railway junctions of the Republic. Vladimirov's teaching activity until 1914 was expressed in lecturing on various courses for medical and veterinary doctors on the doctrine of immunity, glanders, and tuberculosis. From 1914 to 1926, Vladimirov was a professor at the Department of Comparative Pathology of Infectious Diseases of the Leningrad Medical Institute. From 1911 to 1917, he was a member of the Veterinary Committee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Since 1920, he has been a member of the Scientific Medical Council of the People's Commissariat of Health of the RSFSR. From 1906 until the imperialist war, he was a member of the bureau of the International and All-Russian Leagues for the Fight against Tuberculosis. Vladimirov is a founding member of the Leningrad Microbiological Society and an honorary member of the All-Russian Society of Veterinary Surgeons.

Vladimirov has published about 40 scientific papers, the main ones of which are: "On the Sensitivity of Animals to Glanders Toxin" («Архив биологических наук», vol. IV, 1895); "On the Technique of Preparing Anti-Plague Serum" («Врач», 1897); "On Ophthalmic Reaction in Glanders" («Архив ветеринарных наук», 1908); "Glanders Bacillus" («Медицинская микробиология» edited by Tarasevich, 1912); "Osmotische Versuche an lebenden Bakterien", Zeitschrift für physik.
