GARRE, Karl (Carl Garre, 1857-1928), one of the outstanding surgeons of modern Germany, a student of Kocher, P. Bruns, head of the surgical clinic at Breslau, Bonn, where he held the position of professor. As a Swiss, he worked particularly much and was the first to remove the thyroid gland, seeing in its hypersecretion one of the causes of Basedow's disease. Considered one of the best surgical technicians, G. was also enthusiastic about journal work; he was an active editor and contributor to most reputable surgical and general medical journals and large guides to clinical surgery, some of which were translated into Russian.
