KUMMELL Hermann (Hermann Kummell, born in 1852), a famous German surgeon, a student of Schäde. Kummell devoted the greater part of his activity to work in the hospitals of the city of Hamburg and created a whole galaxy of students who already enjoy great renown in their specialty. Kummell is one of the major scientific workers who created the world fame of German surgery. With the opening of the university in Hamburg, one of the founders and first rectors of which was Kummell, he was elected to the chair. Being a pioneer in Europe of the operation of removal of the vermiform appendix, Kummell was also among the first to apply X-rays for the diagnosis of stones of the kidneys and ureters. The study of spondylitis developing after trauma and receiving the name 'Kummell's disease' further increased his renown. Kummell was president of the congress of German surgeons in 1909 and an honorary member of the German Society of Surgeons.
